The universe in the lab uses industrial shock absorbers
GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt, Germany, operates a unique accelerator for heavy ions. Currently, the international accelerator facility FAIR, one of the largest research projects worldwide, is being built there, aiming to produce and research matter in the laboratory that otherwise only occurs in the universe. For the collector ring, which is used to store and cool the ions, the GSI engineers were looking for mechanical rather than electronic components that protect the drive units which are equipped with powerful linear motors. They found what they were looking for when they got in touch with us.
